20 July 2026 marks a key milestone in Europe's digital and industrial transition. The European Commission has officially launched the central Digital Product Passport Registry — the official infrastructure where all products placed on the EU market will need to be registered.
The launch doesn't come alone: alongside the Registry, the EC has made a testing environment available so that businesses and economic operators can familiarise themselves with the system ahead of mandatory deadlines, and has published an official user guide for economic operators.
What is the DPP Registry and why does it matter?
The Digital Product Passport is a structured digital record that accompanies each product throughout its entire lifecycle — from raw material extraction to recycling or reuse. The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), in force since 2024, establishes its progressive implementation across key sectors of the European market.
With the launch of the central Registry, the EU takes a decisive step: it's no longer about preparing for a future obligation, but about integrating into an infrastructure that already exists and will define the rules of the European market for years to come.
Who needs to act and when?
The implementation timeline is progressive and varies by sector. According to the official European Commission source, these are the key milestones:
- Batteries (EV, industrial, LMT) — DPP mandatory 18 Feb 2027
- Iron and steel — delegated act expected Q4 2026
- Construction products — DPP requirements Q2 2027
- Textiles, aluminium and tyres — rules adoption Q3–Q4 2027, mandatory compliance estimated 2029
- Furniture — delegated act expected 2028
- Mattresses and recycled content — 2029
How OKTICS activates your DPP
Since 2019, OKTICS has been working with manufacturers, importers and brands to connect physical products with their digital identity. The OKOCloud platform and OKOTag identifiers (QR, NFC or RFID) enable a fully compliant DPP to be activated in under 30 days, without disrupting existing operations.
The process includes a product data audit, integration with existing ERP and PLM systems, and registration on the EC's official platform — all under a secure architecture with European servers, ISO 27001 certified and GDPR compliant.
